Turkish Night

If you're a fan of music or dance, then a check out an evening "Turkish Night" dinner show, featuring traditional song, dance and costumes from the four corners of Turkey. Favorites include the fast spinning and stomping of the energetic Black Sea Dancers and the mesmerizing whirling of of the famed whirling dervishes. The evening belongs, however, by the lovely belly-dancing ladies who can show you a move or two! Book early at a local agency for good seats. The Natural Beauty of Havasu Falls

Three major cascades at Havasu Creek create a landscape that is both beautiful and entertaining. At the base of these falls, one of which is Havasu Falls, is a travertine pool filled with cold turquoise water. In fact, the names of the falls, the nearby lake, and even the city all come from the water's beautiful color. ("Ha" means water, while "vasu" stands for blue-green).

Located on the Havasupai Indian Reservation in Grand Canyon National Park, Havasu Falls stand 120 feet high. The falls claims one of America's most beautiful campgrounds and backpacking area. For example, beneath the falls lies billowing cottonwoods under 400-foot rock walks which, along with the falling water, creates a striking lullaby for campers.

Although beautiful, getting to Havasu Falls can be quite an adventure. The most popular route begins in Seligman, where drivers can take I-40 to exit 123. After exiting, visitors should drive 33 miles west on Highway 66 to Indian Road 18. At this point, drivers should turn right and drive about 60 miles to a parking lot at Hualapai Hilltop at the end of the road. Alternatively, drivers can access Indian Road 18 via Kingman by driving 50 miles east on Highway 66, which is approximately 6 miles past Peach Springs.

A visit to the falls entails more than just a long drive, however. Once visitors are a Hualapai Hilltop, the journey really begins. Visitors must endure a 10-mile hike from the hilltop to the falls. While the first 1.5 miles is a steep decent down to the bottom of Hualapai Canyon (a trek that you must make back up on your way home), the rest of the hike is mostly flat. Tourists will hike 6.5 more miles to the Hualapai village, followed by 2 more miles to the campground.

Although a trip to the falls includes hours of driving and even more hours of hiking, most would agree that the pristine setting is worth it.

Cuba in the Caribbean

The Caribbean islands are not large but they have paradisaical surroundings with beaches and vegetation typical of the tropic, some of them with volcanoes. In Cuba, beaches and vegetation are richer and larger than in the rest of the small islands. They are different from each other, that is why they are divided into different groups: the Bahamas Islands, and the Greater and the Lesser Antilles. The first ones are mostly small, coralline, completely plain, without mountains or watercourses where the beaches and other sea features are the main attraction; the other two groups of Antillean Islands have, as their main attraction, its nature as well as the bird and marine biological variety, a fact that differentiates them from The Bahamas.

Even between these two groups of Antilles there are notorious differences. One of them is the presence of archipelagos. From the Greater Antilles, (Cuba, Jamaica, La Espanola and Puerto Rico), Cuba is the only one that has an archipelago so numerous. The same happens in the Lesser Antilles, among which Islas Virgenes (The Virgin Islands), the American as well as the British, are the most similar to Cuba in this aspect. The rest of the small islands have a few tiny islands around them, including Cayman Islands.

The Cuban archipelagos have remained almost intact since its discovery by the Spanish; this is due to the fact that they were never attractive for settlement except for the Island of Youth (formerly Island of Pine trees) and the Turiguano Island, where there was only a small village. In some other keys were only groups of fishermen who did not settled in, just stayed occasionally. While the Caribbean Islands looked forward developing tourism, the Cuban archipelagos stayed almost unaltered.

There were interesting natural elements in these islands (known as keys in Cuba), some of them very attractive, such as the wild horse flock in Cayo Romano (the third largest Cuban island), but the economic conditions at that time were not favorable for the development of tourism.

It was not until the decade of the 70' and the 80' of last century that these places were thought of as a tourist attraction because some of them had excellent beaches, were close to the Main Island (Cuba) and did not have dangerous animals that could harm visitors.

Studies were carried out about the possibility of exploiting these territories without affecting the environment or barely affecting it. Nowadays, man has influenced the area in several ways with different effects, the most important for the environment being fishing, tourism and the proclamation of protected areas.

Fishing is practiced with the widely accepted techniques in part of the area and supervised by competent authorities, without affecting the sea biological variety and closely watching the closed seasons. Harbors do not affect the preservation of the environment, they have been in the area for many years and their influence is checked by institutions of the Ministry of Sience, Technology and the Environment (CITMA), which also regulate everything regarding the protection of the environment all over the country in every production and service center.

During the last years the tourism industry has developed the exploitation of these small islands, mainly in three of the four Cuban archipelagos. This is the activity that has a major and varied influence on these islands. Hotels, marinas, airports and scuba diving centers have being built and tours to the reefs on small boats have been organized, all of which requires a motorized transportation infrastructure. Not only the four airports, two on the Northern coast (The King's Gardens Archipelago) and two on the Southern coast (Canarreos archipelago) are consistent with this effort, but also the "pedraplenes" (roads built to connect the main island with the small islands and the keys) of which we will be talking now.

Due to the fact that these islands are separated from the main island (Cuba) by not very deep waters and affected by sea streams, and taking into account such local factors as sediment flow and the sea fauna migrations, some roads similar to those existing in other countries with experience on this matter were built to facilitate communication between the small islands and the rest of Cuba; for instance, the road connecting the Florida keys.

Five of these roads, known in Cuba as "pedraplenes", have been built, all of them in the Northern coast: one in Los Colorados Archipelago (Jutia Key) and the rest (four) at Sabana-Camaguey or the King's Gardens Archipelago. We will describe each of them in further articles about the archipelagos.

The fact that these archipelagos are so isolated from the economic, political and social life from the rest of the country has enabled their natural elements to remain almost intact until now. That is why it is so necessary to preserve the most valuable ecosystems for the next generations, where we find representative specimens, taking steps in every archipelago to handle each situation correctly, with the main objective of maintaining their eco-systems as naturally as possible, with strict control of visits, and encouraging on visitors and neighbor communities the love and care for nature.

These measures make possible to regulate the number of visitors. In these areas you won't find tourist facilities or the comfort you find in specialized centers or hotels. Therefore, the entities in charge of safeguarding the protected areas, the National Center of Protected Areas (CNAP) and the National System of Protected Areas (SNAP) forming part of CITMA, are the promoters and guardians of these areas in Cuba.

At the archipelagos and Cuban coasts there are National Parks, Ecological Reserves, Flora Shelters, Fauna Shelters and Protected Natural Landscapes, categories included in the Cuban Constitution as well as others proposed by international organizations such as the Biosphera Reserve and the Ramsar Places, among others.

Is Sitting Through a Time Share Presentation Worth a Bahamas Vacation?

About three years ago, I received a vacation offer in the mail. The offer said that if I agreed to sit through a 90 minute timeshare presentation, then I would get a free Bahamas vacation with several days in Florida. A free vacation sounded very appealing to me at that time because I was desperate for a getaway. I decide to accept the offer so I purchased my airfare and began to look forward to my Bahamas vacation. I thought that I could easily sit through 90 minutes of the presentation, say no, and be done with it.

I was really looking forward to the promised luxury hotel, free transportation and tickets to some happenings. My husband had some doubts about the offer but he was still as excited as I was. He told me that this might turn out to be something other than I was expecting, even though he was also looking forward to his time in the sun.

On the other hand, I was busy dreaming about the enjoyment, fun and relaxation of the amazing Bahamas vacation offer. We were to take a day cruise from Ft. Lauderdale to the Bahamas and then would be greeted when we arrive. I have been told to expect a cruise that was incredibly nice on the offer. However, I felt like I was on a tour boat with lots of others crowded into a small area. I was not very impressed with the initial part of my vacation.

Unfortunately, my husband's suspicions seemed to be coming true because we spent the day with horrible entertainment, expensive food and fighting for a spot in the sun. My Bahamas vacation wasn't starting off too wonderfully. However, I played it off because I didn't want my husband to know that I was starting to have doubts.

We finally arrived at the port in the Bahamas after a less than pleasant journey. We were driven to our designated hotel and I couldn't wait to see what the hotel was like. However, my Bahamas vacation was still not going well because the hotel was far from luxury. It was nice, but not something I would have paid to stay at so I was very disappointed.

However, I was determined to make the most of my vacation and enjoy it. We spent lots of time in the sun and did the normal touristy things. I convinced my husband to go with me on the dolphin excursion. It was a wonderful experience and we actually got to swim with the dolphins. That was the best part of my Bahamas vacation.

We showed up for our 90 minute meeting on the day of the timeshare meeting. It was a bit annoying because the speeches were very long, pushy and lasted for almost 3 hours. It almost seemed as if they wouldn't let us leave until someone took the bait. My husband decided that he had enough after 3 agonizing hours, so he stood up and said that we were leaving. My Bahamas vacation was not exactly what I'd been hoping for.

Play Golf at St Andrews - How to Get a Tee Time on Scotland's Famous St Andrews Old Course

Option #1 - Advanced Application:

This is the most straightforward and cost effective way of obtaining a tee time on the Old Course. The Links Trust of St. Andrews will start accepting applications for tee times in 2010 on September 2, 2009 at 10:00 am British Standard Time. Accepted applicants will be notified directly from St. Andrews if they were successful around the end of October early November. Please note that there is a two course requirement using this method. Tee times for September are not available via this method.

Option #2 - Golf Tour Operators/ Local Hotels:

Some tour operators and local hotels have allocations of guaranteed tee times for the Old Course. They are usually sold out of these tee times by the end of 2009, there is usually a premium on these times the amount of which can vary. A second St Andrews course is included in this method.

Option #3 - The Ballot (Lottery):

Approximately 50% of Old Course starting times are not allocated to advance starting times but are allocated via the ballot (source - St. Andrews Links Trust). Many visitors take advantage of this method of playing the Old Course. With a properly designed golf tour staying three to four days in St Andrews your odds of receiving a starting time via the ballot system are quite reasonable.

The daily ballot or lottery is drawn after 2:00 pm for play on the following day (except on Saturdays for Monday play as the Old Course is closed on Sundays). All the tee times on both Thursday afternoon and all day Saturday are reserved for the ballot.

Please note: the ballot does not offer an absolute guarantee for play on the Old Course.

Option #4:

You can buy packages from the Old Course Experience. These packages include a three or four night hotel stay in St Andrews along with a guaranteed Old course tee time and golf at two or three other local courses. These packages start at approximately $3,500.00 per person.

As a native of Scotland I personally I feel that scalping tee times to play the world's oldest golf course is sacrilegious, but that's just my opinion.

Requirements to play the Old Course: The maximum handicap for play on the Old Course is 24 for men and 36 for ladies. You must have an official handicap card (USGA or equivalent) to play the Old Course.

The Old Course is closed on Sundays and at different times during the season including most of September and the first week of October.

In the legacy of legendary athletes, many times track and field stars are overlooked in favor of those stars of the popular televised team sports such as hockey and football. However, there are enough people who are interested in a Jesse Owens quiz that it shows that there are some track stars who have been able to surpass even that limitation and enter into the list of athletic legends that people think of in this country. Jesse Owens was born James Cleveland Owens, and would become one of the most well known Olympic Athletes in American History.

Jesse Owens trivia should pay homage to the coach that probably was largely responsible for enabling him to have the career that he did. Owens came from a background that required him to be working after school in a shoe shop, and this meant that he couldn't attend the regularly scheduled track practices organized by his school. However, Charles Riley, the junior high track coach where Owens was attending school, saw that the boy had both a passion and a talent for running, and so arranged for him to be able to practice before school instead. Owens would spend his entire life being sure that this junior high coach received much of the credit for Owen's own success.

A Jesse Owens quiz should note that he achieved this success despite his racial background, which at the time was a huge limitation to him. He could only eat in certain restaurants and sleep in certain hotels, as could all African Americans of the time. He was also never offered a scholarship for school despite setting records for NCAA championships which have yet to be broken to this day.

No Jesse Owens trivia would be complete without discussing the Berlin Olympics which is where his star rose as high as it would ever be able to. These Olympics were during the height of Hitler's rule, and were especially galling to the leader who had wanted to host the Olympics partly to showcase Aryan athletic superiority over those of African descent. He won four gold medals at those Olympics - in the 100m dash, the Long Jump, the 200m sprint, and the 4X 100 relay. It would take almost fifty years for someone else to walk away from the Olympics with four gold medals. He passed away at the age of sixty six from lung cancer.

You don't pay it any mind because you know traffic or other elements may present an issue. That is understandable, but now its 9:15 and still only one person has been accounted for.

Your heart begins to race at this point, because you know how much time, effort and money you put into your home meeting. All of your precious energy will be lost if nothing comes out of this event, it has to work, "people will come, I know it"! You think these thoughts of positive self persuasion. Recipe for Chilaquiles with Peppers, Eggs, and Zucchini

Use quality tortillas for this dish to get the most from it. This dish is excellent with fresh zucchini and peppers from the garden.

What You Need

Oil
10 corn tortillas
1 medium onion
1 zucchini, cut into 2" strips
1 red or yellow bell pepper, cut in strips
4 eggs
1 cup sour cream
1 or 2 cups tomatillo salsa
Salt and pepper to taste

How to Make It

Cut the onion in two pieces and slice it into thin strips. Lay out the tortillas and cut them in half. Slice each side into strips.

Heat some oil in a skillet. Fry the tortillas until they are crisp. Move them aside on a plate when they are done.

If necessary, add more oil. Cook the onions until they soften. Add the peppers and zucchini, stirring until the vegetables are all tender and starting to turn golden. Put the tortillas back in the skillet and mix well. Crack the eggs over the top. As the egg whites begin to set, break the yolks and stir everything together.

Once the yolks are cooked through, add the sour cream and salsa. Heat through and serve hot with extra salsa and sour cream.

Diamond Head Volcano is Honolulu's Landmark of Hawaii

Diamond Head is Honolulu's landmark of Hawaii, and probably Hawaii's most recognizable symbol. It dominates southern Oahu and looms over the beaches of Waikiki.

Diamond Head might be just another extinct volcano, but it's also the best place to orient see the breathtaking landscape of Oahu's southern reaches. From the top of Diamond Head all of Honolulu and beyond is laid out for you. The coast, the beaches, the other landmarks, like Pearl Harbor and downtown, the neighborhoods, valleys and ridges. And because it's so close to Waikiki's hotels, it's a very popular hiking activity. The hike up is less than a mile and takes less than two hours.

It's all part of Diamond Head State Park and it's easy to get to. Just take TheBus (#58) from Waikiki or drive down Kalakaua Avenue to Monsarrat, by the Honolulu Zoo. This turns into Diamond Head Road. Tell the bus driver you'd like to get off at Diamond Head's entrance.

Go in through the little tunnel entrance. There's a parking lot, an info center, rest rooms, and a little kiosk. The trail up brown and dusty Diamond Head starts here.

The hike up to the top starts with a walk across the floor of the volcano, and then the trail becomes gradually steeper and rocky, which winds its way up to the first lookout and half-way point. This might take about 20-30 minutes, and from here you can see the Windward Coast of Oahu. But the best is yet to come.

After you climb a concrete stairway you'll come to a 225-foot tunnel that's cut into the mountainside. It's a good place to get out of the sun for a few minutes and get ready for the next flight of stairs.

On the other side of the tunnel is another flight of steps, slightly longer than the first, but after that you're practically there. Actually, the lowest level of the Fire Control Station Diamond Head. Go up the spiral stairs to the top of the station and you can exit to the observation station at the summit of Diamond Head. Straight ahead is the broad blue Pacific, the green slopes of the Koolaus, all of Honolulu and beyond, as well as a bird's eye view of Waikiki.

Stay, take lots of pictures, have a light snack and some water. Re-apply your sunscreen and revel in the moment. After your hour or so hike up, your 30-45 minutes trip down will be much, much easier. But watch the time: The gates close shut at 6pm.

Diamond Head State Park is open from 6-6 all year. There's a $1 admission for walk-ins, or $5 per carload. If you want to try and avoid the tour groups, come early in the morning or after one'ish in the afternoon.

Bring comfortable walking shoes, water, sunscreen, a sunhat, a camera and a friend. A flashlight is handy for the tunnels, and you could use a towel to help block the sun, fan yourself, or wipe down your face with some cool water. And binoculars would come in really handy.

Apple Blossom Festival - An Awesome Event

The 2008 Apple Blossom Festival went on as planned despite several threats of rain. People were everywhere for the weekend in Winchester, Virginia on the first weekend of May this year. It is hard to figure the actual attendance because there is no gate to this downtown Winchester event. But there were as many people as there always is at this awesome celebration.

There was a carnival open three days before the actual Apple Fest. Powers Great American Midway was the host carnival. It was located about three miles from downtown the host of the main venue. The Circus provided by the Clyde Beatty - Cole Bros Circus was at the Apple Blossom Mall around two miles from downtown. Both of these extra attractions drew large crowds as well. The rides were always turning at the carnival lot. The people packed in elbow to elbow on Friday and Saturday night at both the Circus and the carnival lots.

The patrons were spending money as always. They just did not support the games for sure. Some of the games workers complained of not getting many players. The people seemed disinterested in the games as a whole. The Water Races and quarter pitches did better than usual. The balloon games did well as normal. But several other games took a huge hit in overall grosses. Some of these games were down over 50% in gross. That is an abnormal decrease in sales for any event in a one year period. It was terrible for the games concessionaires and workers.

It was said that there were a few more games on the streets spots than normal. Some estimated up to 10-12 games were added. There were certainly a bunch of games on the streets. They were covering footage in 5 different blocks. If there were more games in Winchester this year that would account for some of the loss in revenue by the games people. One concessionaire stated that although he did not have more games this year he had twice as much help. So the spot was not as far off for him as most this year.

The food sold as always because people have to eat no matter what. People will often buy a certain food at every event they attend. Well in Winchester it is the apples that are going. Several people enjoyed theirs via candy apples. Man those candy apple vendors had to have made a bundle.They were selling them no matter what.

The Firefighters put on a huge parade every year at the Apple Blossom Fest. The parade is long and has many nice floats. It normally takes 2 hours or longer to run through. The Festival has fireworks on two nights. This display is nice and bright and lasts around 15-20 minutes. There are bands to listen to and many other fun activities at this annual festival.

The first day, Tuesday, at the carnival lot things were slower than normal years. The attendance was down and some blamed it on the weather. It was somewhat chilly that day with a little wind to make matters worse. Wednesday was twice as good and basically back to normal crowd size. Thursday was slightly better and was just a scantling off of the Friday crowd. Saturday was by far the best day for all the vendors locations. Weather the location was on the carnival lot or downtown or at the circus lot. Saturday was the finale and the people came out in droves supporting this long time Apple Festival.

Dining

Dining choices at Atlantis have expanded in recent years, but it can still be a challenge to make a reservation where and when you want. As crazy as it sounds, it's advisable to book tables a couple of weeks before your vacation if you want to avoid an 11:00pm seafood buffet with your tired kids. Best bets for restaurants include NoBu, Dunes, and Cafe Martinique. Throughout Atlantis Paradise Island you'll find that food prices are very high, so you may want to consider the prepaid food plans that are available. Your choices will be a little more limited, but your wallet will thank you.

Activities for Children

The great draw for kids (at least, my kids) is the waterslides, particularly the huge Mayan Temple Slides. These can keep them occupied for hours. One important tip: Make sure everyone has swimsuits without metal rivets, zippers, studs, etc. These are not allowed on the slides, and you'll be charged a fortune to buy an acceptable swimsuit at the resort.

The Atlantis Kids Club has a variety of options for children aged 3 through 12, so your kids can be safe and supervised while they have fun, and while you hit the more grownup entertainment.

Casino

Lavishly decorated with sculptures by renowned glass artist Dale Chihuly, the casino at Atlantis Paradise Island is, as you've come to expect, big. The casino includes over 800 slot machines, and 75 table games including baccarat, roulette, craps, blackjack and poker. You can also wager on major sports events and US racetracks from a comfortable player's lounge.

Spa

Here you are offered a full American breakfast daily in a choice of four restaurants: Seagrapes, Marketplace, Water's Edge, and Murray's Delicatessen. Llandudno is a great place to stay in North Wales and is the regions premier coastal resort. Llandudno's beautifully curved Victorian promenade is home to most of the towns hotels. The hotel is set in a wonderful location with views towards the Snowdonia Mountains and beyond. The Bodysgallen Hall and Spa Hotel is rated as one of the finest in the whole of Wales. Nassau and Freeport

The cities of Nassau on New Providence Island and Freeport on Grand Bahama are the only choices for buyers who want urban or suburban surroundings and the amenities that come with it--extensive shopping, a wide array of cultural opportunities, hospitals, multiple golf courses, and direct flights to many major airports.

New Providence, a small island dominated by Nassau and its suburbs, is home to 215,000 people--fully three-fourths of the Bahamas' population. Nassau has a busy downtown with both modern and historic architecture, and on the outskirts, a strip of high-rise hotels and casinos along Cable Beach. Paradise Island, connected to New Providence by a bridge, is home to the gargantuan Atlantis and other resorts. New Providence and Paradise Island have many gated subdivisions and townhouse developments, as well as high-rise condominiums. On average, real estate prices here are much more expensive than elsewhere in the Bahamas. Expect to spend $1.5 million for a typical canal-front house in one of the popular gated communities. A one-acre beachfront lot (the yardstick we will use throughout this article) would cost at least $3 million.

Grand Bahama, the northernmost of the major Bahamian islands, has a population of 50,000, the greatest part in and around Freeport. Grand Bahama is almost 100 miles long, however, and unlike New Providence, has less populated regions with deserted beaches and tropical pine forests. Lucaya, the residential area of Freeport, has a vast network of interconnected canals lined with thousands of home lots. Canal-front lots are reasonably priced--in the $125,000 to $250,000 range. One-acre beachfront lots in Lucaya sell for $1.5 million and up.

The Out Islands

After Freeport, the largest "city" in the Bahamas is Marsh Harbour, with a population of only 5000. The majority of settlements in the Bahamas are even smaller, with just a few hundred souls. This is the world of the Out Islands--large areas of untouched land with the occasional house or small village.

Abaco and Exuma

The Abacos and Exumas are not adjacent physically, but they have much in common. They are the most popular yachting destinations in the Bahamas, and their islands and cays provide beautiful cruising grounds. Abaco and Exuma are better known than the other Out Islands, and they each have several major resort developments. Prices are therefore higher. One-acre beachfront lots on Great Exuma are selling in the $1-2 million range. Abaco has prices in this range as well, but also less expensive beachfront in some locations.

Bimini

Hemingway made his "island in the stream" famous as a center of deep-sea fishing, and it remains so today. Bimini is also just 50 miles from the east coast of Florida, which ensures a good yachting crowd. Bimini has one major resort development, Bimini Bay Resort and Casino. Bimini Bay has no casino, but it does offer condos with boat slips in the $600,000 range. The only beachfront lot listed on Bimini, for comparison purposes, is a 2.7 acre parcel for $1.7 million.

Eleuthera

With sixty miles of beaches and only a few dozen hotel rooms, Eleuthera is a paradise for beach lovers who enjoy privacy and unspoiled natural beauty. Eleuthera has four major resorts planned or underway, but none is near completion yet, and overall, the island is still rustic and relatively unknown. Eleuthera is therefore less expensive than Abaco and Exuma--one-acre beachfront lots sell in the $500,000 range. With a population of 8000 and close proximity to resort-rich Harbour Island, Eleuthera has good infrastructure, stores, and services. Andros, Cat Island, Long Island

These three islands are the next step up in remoteness and the next step down in name recognition, infrastructure, services, and prices.

Andros is said to be the largest unexplored landmass in the hemisphere. The island's interior is home to the six-foot iguanas, the rare Bahamian boa constrictor, and who knows what else. The east coast of the island, the only populated area, has scattered villages and miles of deserted beaches. For those not afraid of who-knows-what-else, beachfront lots on Andros are selling in the $200,000 to $250,000 range.

Fifty miles long and with a population of only 1600, Cat Island is one place where you'll never have to wait in line. Cat has many miles of spectacular pink-sand beaches and several delightful boutique resorts. A one-acre beachfront lot will set you back $350,000-400,000.

The aptly named Long Island is 96 miles long and only seven miles wide at its widest point. Long Island has a varied topography ranging from hills and cliffs in the north, to flatlands in the south. Deadman's Cay, the commercial center, is fairly well equipped, with a medical clinic, banks, and well-stocked food stores. Prime beachfront lots on the island sell for $375,000, and lots on a narrower beach are currently selling for as little as $185,000.

San Salvador, Acklins, Crooked Island, Mayaguana, Inagua

For the true pioneers among you, these islands are farther south, more remote, and less populated. But the prices are tempting. A four-acre beachfront lot on Crooked Island is selling for $525,000--95% less than you would pay in Nassau.
